30 April 2006

April 29th, I was able to ride my mountain bike today and it was good. The best part about it was that I chose to ride one of my more favorite rides and had a fantastic time doing it. I left my home in Kaysville and headed south on main. About 20 minutes later I arrive at the mouth of Farmington Canyon. Now for those of you who know much about Farmington canyon, you'll know that the higher in elevation you go the better it gets typically the people you run into are a bit smarter.

For example... I made my way up the steep pavement and onto the dirt. The first switchback I came to I found a small family (father, mother, infant child and possibly 6-8 year old girl) Nothing wrong with this situation, so I thought. As I got closer I soon found out that the father was teaching the young girl how to shoot a gun. That's not too bad but.. The were standing on the road, shooting at who knows what less than 20 feet away, on the side of the road. Ok, a bit weird... but they also had their SUV parked about 10 feet away from their target. I've got numerous stories like this if you care.

So I continued with my ride up and up and up. the gate to the radar towers is closed so made my way around it and continued up. As I approached the top I met up with a few snowmobilers who seemed to be a little shocked to see me. At time I was wishing I had a few machine's myself along with my skis. There is some fantastic skiing to be had up there so if anyone is interested let me know.

Finally, just shy of 2 hours of climbing and 5,000' I made it to the top. This is nothing new really. I enjoy this ride quite frequently during the summer months. But given the time and season, this ride was what I needed to fulfill my weekend. It's defiantly a good one and strongly recommend it. If you care to join me sometime, feel free to give me a shout. It's even better with company.

p.s. as you can see from the photos, the snow is deep and needs to be skied. i'm game any time.

Weekend Warrior

09 April 2006

Some of you may be familiar with the term "weekend warrior" and others my not. In any case, I feel that it is becoming a term I'm unfortunately getting to know. I've never considered myself a weekend warrior, but given the load of school work, time spent at my internship, homework and last and probably least... sleep, I'm loving this new label that sums up my cycling career.

Thankfully I was able to get out this weekend and after a nice 5 hour ride with some great friends, I returned home to spend some time with my wife and pull a few weeds in the yard. I wish more than anything that I could be putting in more hours on the bike but with school as my #1 priority, I'm only given so much. Thankfully (again) that the light seems to be getting brighter which means the end of the tunnel is near....
