Bicycle Art

30 May 2006

I'm working on some fun "bicycle art" for my studio. this is just a proof for now (40"X40") i've been working on it for about 3-4 hours and im turning in for the evening. Tomorrow I'll take a look at it and probably make some changes, or as I usually do... scrap it. This happens all to often with projects but for the most part its usually for the better.

Thank goodness it over mountain bike race

27 May 2006

Today the intermountain cup mountain bike race series made a stop at it's newest venue, Thanks Giving Point aka The place where all the wind blows to. The temp was a bit lower than usual but that wasn't too bad... The wind on the other hand was blowing and blowing and blowing even more. The course was a single track trail that winded (putting it lightly) through lush fields of weeds and dry dirt with not a hill in sight. I can see the potental of a venue like this as a good place to hold a tuesday night dirt crit.. Shorten the course from a 10 mile loop that takes roughly 40 min. to a 15 min loop with smooth trails, jumps and berms. but for a Utah mountain bike race this one is like the kid on sesamy streed that not doing the same thing as the others, and that's not good.

I used my internal GPS device to illustrate a map of the course. Hope you like it.

p.s. Thanks to Brandon FIrth, Ty Hansen and the other guy in red, for pulling me around the course. I'm sorry I sat in for so long but at the time it was all I could do. Also a big thanks to Shannon for spending yet another Sat. sitting at a bike race. She's the best support a kid like myself could ever have. Thank you

Home and Happy

24 May 2006

First off, thank you to those who sent messages of care during Zippers little escape. You'll be happy to know that during the rainy night Zipper found refuge in our neighbors garage. We're not sure how he got in there but it just so happens that it's the same garage that his girl friend (he says they're seeing other cats) lives in. I must also bring to your attention that his "girl friend" just had a batch of kittens and I think Zipper was showing her that regardless of the surgery he had when he was a young buck... He can still be a good father figure.

He is a good cat and 99% of the time he comes home when he's told to. He's now got a full belly and acting as he usually does by perching himself atop the doors in our home. Thanks again to those who sent words of encouragement and to my mother for teaching me how to worry, even when it's a cat.

MIA

23 May 2006

Well, my words are coming back to bit me. As I mentioned in a previous post about our cat Zipper, he always comes back when we call him. Not today. He was anxious to get outside this morning so at 8 am Shannon let him out. I had the day off and was going to spend most of it working in the yard so I anticipated him showing up around noon to find a shady spot under the apple tree to watch me work. To my surprise he never showed. It's now 12 at night and he's still not home. This is very unusual for Zipper because he depends on us for breakfast, lunch and dinner and a soft bed to sleep in at night. We're about to head to bed now and hope that he will soon return. Our thoughts are positive and hoping that he found himself a lady friend and is spending the night. He's been fixed so we wont have to worry about child support.

So at this time I ask you to keep in your thoughts, our lonely little kitty on this breezy summer night. Thank you.

Spent with a smile (soldier hollow mtb race)

21 May 2006

Soldier Hollow, stop #5 of the Intermountain Cup mountain bike race series.

After just over three hours in the saddle with some 36 miles and 5200 vertical feet... i'm spent. The pro men's field was stacked with a total of 12 riders, all of which are riding really well and incredibly fit. The race started out with a pace that at the time seemed a bit too comfortable, which isn't always a bad thing. We had to do four laps on course that demands a lot of consistent power and little recovery. As we rolled up the first hill I found myself mid pack and feeling fine. With that in mind I decided to stick with that tempo and make a bit of a charge towards the front as the race progressed. As the race progressed I discovered that I really didn't have much in the bank to charge with so I settled in for what I call "surviving the game". About half way through the first lap some of thoughts running through my mind we're as follows: There is no possible way you're going to finish this race. Why are you going so slow. You should probably forget about racing any Nationals this season. GIVE UP.

fortunately my good friend Ryan Blaney (who started in the Expert group 1 min. back) caught me and gave me the motivation to pick it up. We ride together a lot and really feed from each others attitudes. He defiantly boosted mine and helped me keep going.

On our third lap he veered right to the finish line and (Experts only had to do three laps) and I continued on for my final lap. By this time my spirits had been raised and the smile on my face was beginning to show a bit more. The thoughts in my head were now saying: You can finish. You should race Nationals. You're fitness will come around, it's just going to take some more time. I ended up finishing the race in Seventh place with a smile on my face. I was happy because I love the sport. It may have been hot and I was extremely tired. I may be a bit behind in my training and fitness level, but I'm happy to have the opportunity to do what I get to do. Race my bicycle.

A big thanks to Shannon for always spending her Saturday's, standing around in at my bike races. She's the best fan anyone could every have and knows exactly how thing should be run. Most of all, she puts up with me.

Who is Zipper?

17 May 2006

I recently received a comment from a wonderful family member who, unfortunately I don't see enough. The comment was congratulated me on graduating but at the end she asked "who is Zipper?"

To get her up to speed and maybe others out there who are not aware... Zipper is my good buddy. He's about 2.5 years old, has four legs, whiskers and the same color of fur as my hair. He's our cat, and a good one at that. He doesn't ware a hat, and he's not that fat. Wow, a bit of the Dr. Seuss in me there.

Zipper's a great cat. Spends most of the time looking for a warm and inviting lap to cuddle in or crying to go outside. We let him out during the day but if we ever need him to come home all we do is call his name and he comes running. Better than most dogs. He's quiet and eats any bug that comes into the house. He's clean and hangs out with nice cats from around the neighborhood. His favorite thing to do is get on the roof of any house. He's often spotted on my roof as well as the neighbors.

Now I couldn't post an article on my cat without mentioning my best friend of all... My dog. Liddle is his name and hanging out is his game. At 160 lbs he's not the most active dog but will give anything a try time and time again. He currently lives with my parents because of anxiety problems. He's sort of a home body that loves day trips. All in all he's my best friend that no matter what I do or what kind of day I'm having, will remain my best friend.

No school... That's a good thing

08 May 2006

Today has been great. I made myself a nice breakfast consisting of eggs and waffles, I cleaned the house and spent some quality time with Zipper. I soon made my way to Bikers Edge, where I assembled my shiny new bike, 2006 Cannondale Scalpel. Our team has been set up with the magnificent bicycles and I was fortunate enough to take mine for a little spin this evening. I met up with some friends in SLC and we road the shoreline trail from the Zoo to the bobsled trail near the avenues and back. it was brilliant. So far I love the bike and am very excited to get out a bit more now that I'm not so busy with homework.

I still have a full plate though... Lots of yard work, and time to pun in on my own portfolio plus a bit of investigation. Design investigation. All is well though and life continues to be wonderful. Thanks for tuning in.

There's always something new at the end

05 May 2006

I'm on my way out the door, destination... weber state university. Reason... to participate in a graduation ceremony. This is a day I never really thought would happen. Five years in the making and for the longest time, this day seemed so far out of reach it just wasn't worth it. Was it worth it? most defiantly. Why? there are too many reason why my college education is so important and worth while to even begin to list in this post. Maybe i'll start writing my thoughts in my sketch book and collaborate them someday, but I'm sure it will still be too long and time consuming to share with others. There are however, aspects about my journey through school that need to be shared and will be shared very soon. But at this time I'd like to thank those of you who have helped me through this process with your support and advice. Basically everyone who reads this post has had an impact on me. Everyone who has sent me an email (except for all that junk mail... those people just waste my time) or visited studiophive.com. All of my family, friends and professors. And especially, my wife Shannon. I will honor each and ever one of you sometime throughout my life by giving to others what you have given to me. I have learned so much and will continue to do so and hopefully be able to spread that knowledge and compassion to those in need.

Thank you. Thank you everyone.
