We cleaned out over 130 pumpkins last night and will spend today, all of tonight and tomorrow, carving. The display will be set up tomorrow afternoon, just in time for the Halloween festivities to begin. Feel free to stop by and check it out, eat some food and visit with other strangers that do the same.

Also, if you'd like to come show off your artistic abilities... joins us this evening to show off your skills. Anyone is welcome.

I'M JUST BIG BONED

24 October 2007

I sustained a small injury last night in the first two minutes of our indoor soccer match. I sat out for a bit hoping that my ankle would magically feel better and I'd be back at full speed. Unfortunately it wasn't but I decided to continue playing, just a bit slower and less active than usual. After about 45 minutes, I started realizing that it would be in my best interest to stop and ice immediately. Thanks to Shan and her mad rehab skills, she checked me over and iced me up and this morning things are feeling much better. I don't think it helps that I've done the same thing to the same ankle more than a few times. I guess it's good thought that it's the same ankle every time. For now, I'll take it easy on the right side and step it up on the left. The rest of the week looks fantastic outside and we may even get a sunny weekend so I'm planning on making the most of it.

THE TRACKER

20 October 2007

Kashi and I went for a hike this morning at Snowbasin. We got out early in hopes of avoiding the snow, wishful thinking I guess. We ran into some moose in Strawberry bowl and Kashi showed me his tracking skills and kept on their heels through the blizzard. We followed a bull and two cows all the way back to the car. Now, after a warm bath, Kashi is fast asleep on his bed.

HELVETYEA!

18 October 2007

Brilliant! The Salt Lake chapter of the AIGA, presented Helvetica, The Film, last night at the Tower Theater.

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.

I thought it was a fantastic film that provided an educational look into the history of type and the impact that it has on designers as well as society. As shown through most of my work, you could tell that I'm a big fan of Helvetica so naturally I'd be a fan of the film. Thankfully though, the film was not a full feature "monument" to a wonderful typeface. Opposition was expressed by some amazing designers from around the world. Their views on design were wonderful and their arguments were valid, but that doesn't change my outlook on the Swiss wonder. Over all I really enjoyed the film and would love to purchase the DVD. If you'd like to see what this film is all about click here. For those of you who don't care much for design or at least type design, sorry for the nerdy post, but that's just the way it is.

I'M UP TOO

14 October 2007

It's about 2:30 pm and Shannon and I are still rolling. So for those of you racing the day/night/day away at the 24 hours of Moab, I almost feel as if I've been a part of the scene. Thanks to the real time updates I've been keeping tack or everyones progress, plus the occasional text from Sager, helps me get the inside scoop. Keep up the good work everyone.

The reason Shan and I are up is because of our little b-day (Shan's on Monday) shopping adventure today. We've been assembling our new furniture items that we purchased from IKEA, and making some changes around the house. Finally our bedroom feels a bit more complete and not so miss-matched.

THOSE AREN'T SPEED WOBBLES

08 October 2007

Sometimes a weekend in sunny southern Utah can be bit on the frigid side. Or worse, it can be down right cold and miserable.

Saturday morning was cloudy, cold and windy, just like the weather report said it would be. With expectations of clearing skies around 11, we headed out with a nice tail wind fueling our optimism for the days events. Soon our tail wind did what most enjoyable tail winds do, and turned on us. Not a big deal though, we had a nice group of riders to share it with and kept on pushing the pedals. Heading from Moab, up the Colorado river, we came to the course split. I bid Shannon and my sister fair-well at they continued on up the river while the rest of us took a turn towards the La Sal Mountain loop.

By now the rain was coming down but not enough to make many people turn around. For some reason, the cars that passed by with snow piled up on the windshield and mere fact that we couldn't even see the mountains, was still not a good enough reason to turn around. The wind had died down and because we were climbing it was quite warm. We continued on towards through the rain while Shannon and Sidney pushed through the wind to the 48 mile turn-around.

Located about 5 miles from the "top" was a feed station where the ride officials were not letting anyone go any further. Too miserable, wet, cold and snowy. So we began our decent back through the clouds and into the valley and that's where things got BAD. I've never been so cold while riding my bike in my entire life. I was wet, it was still raining, and riding at about 45 mph, my whole body froze up and began to ache from shivering so much.

Further down the road I notice my father pulled off to the side, so I stopped to see if everything was okay. It wasn't. He couldn't control his breathing and shivering and therefore could not control his bike. All my life, at times like these, my father has always been there for me and now the tables had turned. It was though "the man of steel" had been broken down and at the time I wasn't sure of what to do.

I soon forgot about how cold I was and turned my attention to my father. Myself along with his friends that were riding with us swapped jackets, vests and what ever else we could to get him warmed up. He seemed to snap out of it a bit and said he'd be okay. We began back down the river towards Moab, with blue skies in sight. Eventually my father was back to his normal, trash talking self, and turning the pedals at his "man of steel" pace.

By the time we made it back to town the sun was out and 100% warmer than the previous 5 hours. Shannon and Sidney pulled out about 50 miles for the day and were back enjoying a warm shower at the hotel, while the rest of us dined on warm fajitas and a cold Coke at the start finish line.

An eventful ride during a wonderful weekend in Moab. Sunday was spent with the family, climbing the Indian ladder, some sigh seeing at Dead Horse Pointe and a delicious turkey burger at Moab Brewery. Photos Here!

THE BIG SOUTH

04 October 2007

I'm headed to Moab tomorrow to ride my road bike. Seems a bit strange I know, but that's how it is. My father has been going down for the past few years to participate in The Big Nasty century ride. I'm personally not down with the name but the ride sounds great. Shan's going with me but we have to leave Kashi home. We gave him strict rules as to when he needs to be in at night and that he can have only one friend over at a time. Oh, and be nice to Zipper!

Stay tuned for photos and a full Southern Utah report.

STAR ONE ONE

03 October 2007

After a bit of research, I found that Utah's code for this type of situation is *11. Maybe if I have time I'll create a graphic... but I'm sort of over it now. What ever!

STAR SEVEN SEVEN

I received this story from a friend in an email. What's a post without an image... so I made my own.

It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren’s parents have always told her never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc.
Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren’t, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.
Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

Look who's sporting SMITH.
Brad keeps it real with the Smith Serpico sunglass.

Demi Moore has been seen all over the place rocking her new Melrose.

Cool shades, but what a lame post.
