CARIBBEAN 2019

An adventure and core memory like none other. Gary and Mary Silver (Granpier and Nana) invited our family to join them for a two-week sailing trip aboard the Liahona. The Liahona belonged to the Silvers and for nearly 20 years, had been sailing the waters of the Caribbean. It was originally built in France, where the Silver family hit the open sea for her maiden voyage. They sailed across the Bay of Biscay, to Spain and then to the Canari Islands. A few months later Captain Gary and his crew sailed it across the Atlantic ocean where it spent the remainder of its time traveling north and south from Grenada to Fort Lauderdale.

2019 our journey began when Shannon, the kids, and I met Gary and Mary in St. Martin. The plan was to island-hop around the British Virgin Islands and eventually make our way back to Puerto Rico.

Our days consisted of sailing from one island to another, anchoring just off the shore then spending as much time in the water and on the beach as we possibly could. We snorkeled through gorgeous coral reefs, sea caves, and school after school of beautiful fish. Occasionally, we’d find a sea turtle, ray, barracuda, and even a shark.

Exhausted from each day’s adventure, we would crash when the sun went down as the boat would rock us to sleep each night.

We had an incredible experience detaching from the busy world around us. Through work, play, and the tight quarters of the sailboat, we grew closer together. I will continue to dream about taking the kids sailing like this.
